Introduction

The Arizona STEM Network, led by Science Foundation Arizona, is a collaboration of businesses, educators, government, and philanthropy with a common agenda to graduate more Arizona students prepared for the global economy through STEM education. Science Foundation Arizona’s goal is to improve STEM education in Arizona by encouraging and streamlining the interaction between Business Advocates and Education Partners.

“Business Advocates” are businesses or individuals that have indicated their interest in working with educators to improve STEM education by completing an Advocate Intake form, registering on the Arizona STEM Network, and accepting the Business Advocate and Education Partner Agreement (this “Agreement”). Business Advocates will indicate on the Advocate Intake form which types of services, support, and/or resources that the Business Advocate is willing to donate or otherwise provide.

“Education Partners” are educators or educational institutions in Arizona that have registered as members of the Arizona STEM Network and have accepted this Agreement. Education Partners will indicate on the Education Partner intake form the areas of need and/or support for which the Education Partner is looking to receive aid from Business Advocates.

Science Foundation Arizona will build and maintain a database of information about registered Business Advocates and Education Partners (“Database”). The Database will contain information from Business Advocates and Education Partners, and Science Foundation Arizona will use the Database to organize and match Education Partners’ needs with Business Advocates’ resources or services. Once matched, Science Foundation Arizona will send both the Business Advocate and the Education Partner the other’s contact information. Education Partners will then be able to contact their matched Business Advocates for support, and Business Advocates will have the opportunity to get involved in helping advance STEM education through their matched Education Partners.

Science Foundation Arizona will use an evaluation process that aspires to create an engagement between the Business Advocate and Education Partner that furthers, in students:

·      A real and sustainable difference in achievement,

·      A better understanding of the real life applications of math and science,

·      An accelerated development of valuable workplace skills, and

·      Insight into new career opportunities.

Similarly, Science Foundation Arizona aspires that teachers will advance their knowledge of STEM content and its career applications and that businesses will contribute directly to advancing the workforce in Arizona by fostering a talent pipeline of students prepared for the challenges and technology present in the new global economy.

An integral component of the evaluation process is feedback from Business Advocates and Education Partners. After each match, Science Foundation Arizona will send follow-up surveys to the involved Business Advocate(s) and Education Partner(s). The survey will be used to help determine whether the match has been successful, whether the Business Advocate has provided the promised resources or services, and whether the Education Partner has successfully cultivated a relationship with the Business Advocate by allowing the Business Advocate to volunteer and aid as requested. Accordingly, this feedback will be used to strengthen Business Advocate and Education Partner matching by determining the parties and methods that best contribute to the advancement of STEM education in Arizona.
