PHOENIX (December 19, 2014) – On Tuesday, January 6th leaders from the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Phoenix - Professional Chapter, the Cesar Chavez Foundation
and Phoenix Union High School District will host the Arizona Premiere Movie Event for Pantelion Films’ SPARE PARTS – a true and local story about determination and beating incredible odds. The movie, starring George Lopez, Marisa Tomei and Jamie Lee Curtis, portrays four Hispanic students from the Carl Hayden High School Robotics Team that had no experience, only $800 and used car parts and despite all odds they unexpectedly won first place in a national underwater-robotics competition in 2004, beating out teams from colleges, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
“This movie shows us that education plays a major role in the lives of young students,” said city of Phoenix Street Transportation Director Ray Dovalina. “It's the determination of what four individuals with great mentors, limited resources and knowledge can accomplish.”
The Arizona Premiere will celebrate the achievements of the Carl Hayden High School Robotics Team and raise money to create a STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics) focused endowment fund for Phoenix Union High School students.
“It’s key that we, as community as leaders, work together to create resources such as a STEAM endowment fund to foster education opportunities for our youth and tomorrow's leaders,” added Dovalina.
“We are proud that students and teachers of Carl Hayden High School were the inspiration for this motion picture. There are many success stories in our District, and many others just waiting to be written,” said Phoenix Union High School District Superintendent Kent P. Scribner, Ph.D. “Fredi and Allan are experts in engaging young people in project-based learning, and the belief that our students will rise to whatever level of expectation that is set for them. This is a wonderful celebration for our students, staff, and community.”
The Arizona Premiere will be held at 6:20 p.m. in Tempe at the Harkins Tempe Marketplace, 2000 E. Rio Salado Parkway. There will also be a red carpet media event prior to the premiere, from 5:00pm-5:30pm.
As part of the event, the members of the Carl Hayden High School Robotics Team portrayed in the movie and their teachers will be recognized. George Lopez, “Spare Parts” movie cast-member and producer, is also attending the premiere event.
“The Cesar Chavez Foundation is proud to present the movie ‘Spare Parts’,” said Cesar Chavez Foundation Executive Vice President Michael Nowakowski, who is also a city of Phoenix councilmember. “The members of our community featured in this movie are excellent examples of overcoming adversity and will serve as role models to students across the country. They show the true spirit of a ‘Si Se Puede’ attitude.”
