On-Campus College Field Trips for K-12 Students

What is it?

 

College provides K-12 students county-wide with numerous opportunities to visit and participate in a variety of STEM activities on their Cochise College.  In particular, students learn about the equipment and technologies used in various STEM courses and programs.


How is it done?  

  • Math/Science Dayearly spring on campus event open to 1,250 students (A1-1) Budget is approximately $10,000

  • STEM Exploration Academy – high school freshmen and sophomore are brought to the college campus four times in the school year for hands-on activities during their regular school days (A1-2) The budget for this program for two campuses is $10,000

  • STEM Summer CampUS – various college camps held throughout the summer (A1-3)The camps are self-sustaining and camps are closed if they can’t pay for themselves.

  • Engineering Night – a campus night event that provides parents and students information on the college and university engineering career path (A1-4)

  • Budget:  staff coordination/meals/materials and supplies;  marketing and promotional items; transportation funding for buses that bring students to the college and to take the STEM Exploration Academy students on a field trip to a University or industry campus.


What are the results?

  • Students have numerous opportunities to experience STEM activities

  • Students are excited to participate in college activities

  • Parents appreciate the college’s community involvement in offering STEM activities


What have we learned?

  • The college is making an impact on STEM interest in the community

  • The college must continuously create more cutting edge events to engage students

  • Campus activities that involve local companies unite the community efforts to provide more opportunities for students

  • By offering STEM activities on the college campus, it familiarizes the campus to students, parents, and educators
