What is it?

K-12 Director teaches the Counseling and Personal Development (CPD 150) class the first semester, which is an introduction to higher education learning with a component where students research career opportunities online.

How is it done?

  • Rely on a K-12 Director who is critical to the program’s success

  • Students meet once a week for classroom lectures and group discussions

  • Students are given research projects and provided opportunities to explore various careers

  • K-12 Director invites specialists to talk to students during class about career opportunities

  • Budget:  K-12 Director and instructor costs/materials and supplies for class

What are the results?

  • Students become more knowledgeable about opportunities and requirements for career choices

  • It provides an opportunity for students to ask questions about STEM careers

  • Students are better prepared for the personal and academic requirements necessary for success

What have we learned?

  • Because of the online research, students are empowered to make decisions for themselves and take ownership of their career path
  • Students appreciate hearing each other ask questions and expressing concerns in a group setting
  • Students are excited about their career path exploration results
