What is it?
STEM-based professional development opportunities made available to college instructors to keep their STEM knowledge and skills current
How is it done?
Bring in experts to train college professionals rather than sending them individually for training. Example: Sponsor the Lego Education training specialist to review the new Lego EV3 robotics capabilities for all interested faculty
Send specific instructors to training sessions in Mechatronics at Siemens facilities to provide them with the skills necessary to train and educate students in the Siemens certifications
Budget: varies depending on what needs to be accomplished
What are the results?
Bringing in experts is less expensive when seeking to train a group of instructors
Sending faculty members to the Siemens training facilities benefits more hands-on opportunities while working directly with the experts in the Mechatronics program
What have we learned?
- Professional development needs are varied and dependent upon the desired results in order to determine which strategy to utilize (Example: either bringing an expert to the campus or sending faculty members to a training facility).
- Make training relevant to the needs of the college
- Provide lunch for an on campus (onsite) training to provide an opportunity for everyone to discuss other ideas and reflect on the professional development
- Maintaining college members’ professional development in new technologies will ensure that students are more knowledgeable and better prepared for real world experiences and employment
