Questions to Consider

Mission


The club should have a clear mission that explains its purpose and articulates the goals the school/organization aims to accomplish with the club. This mission should align with the mission of the school/organization.
  • What is the core purpose of the STEM Club?
  • What do you hope to accomplish with your STEM Club?
  • How does the purpose of your STEM Club align with school/organization mission?
  • Is your mission statement clear and concise?

Institutional Commitment


School/ organizational administrators must fully support the club.
  • What evidence do you have that your school/organization is in support of your club?
  • Do you have formal documentation of support from your leadership/administration?
  • Do you have a designated space for meetings and activities?
  • What resources will your school/organization provide?

Leadership and Facilitation


The club should have a designated facilitator(s) who assume the responsibility for overall oversight of all club activities including planning, implementation, gathering of materials, fundraising, communication, and evaluation. In addition students should have age-appropriate input into the decision making process.
  • Who will be the designated facilitator for your club?
  • Does this facilitator understand the expectations of this role?
  • What will be the decision-making structure and process?
  • How will leadership responsibilities be shared?

Focus and Theme


The club may have different foci or themes, but these must be well defined. Foci/themes can range from specific student interests and content areas, to geographic and community issues.
  • How will you determine a focus/theme for the club?
  • In what ways does your focus/theme align to your mission and to student interests?
  • Will your focus/theme change over time?
  • What is your focus/theme for the club?

Activity Plan


The club should have a clear activity plan that describes activities, content focus, materials needed, meeting times and locations. The club’s activity plan may vary, depending on the grade-level needs/interests of the students and the focus of the club. Ideally, the club activity plan should include a range of activities, such as long-term projects, field trips, and presentations from STEM professionals.
  • How will you determine specific activities for your club?
  • Do the activities you select reflect your mission, focus/theme, and student interests?
  • How are the activities student-centered and inquiry-based?
  • How will you acquire and manage materials and supplies?
  • What is the timeline for each activity?
  • How will you determine effectiveness?

Engagement Plan


The club should have a clear plan that articulates how it intends to retract and retain students. Students who show an interest in and/or aptitude for STEM areas should be encouraged to join the STEM Club. The club should consider how to embrace a diverse membership. Leadership should determine how information will be shared. The club should at a minimum, include parent nights, visits from STEM professionals, discussions with potential sponsors, and recruitment of club volunteers.

  • How will you recruit students?
  • How will you ensure that your club appeals to a diverse membership?
  • How will you connect your club to community, parents, and industry?
  • How will you keep students interested in your club?

Evaluation Plan


To gauge the effectiveness of its activities and their relevance to the mission, the club should have a clear plan for evaluating its activities. The best evaluation includes both self- and outside evaluators. The club may consider reaching out to parents, teachers, and others students on a regular basis to help it meets its evaluation needs.
  • In what ways will you solicit student and parent feedback?
  • What measures will you use to indicate the impact of the club?
  • How will you measure the effectiveness of the design elements, including mission, institutional commitment, leadership/facilitation, focus/theme, activity plans, engagement plan, and cost/funding?
  • How will data be shared internally and externally?
  • How will you plan for sustaining your club?

Cost/Funding


The club needs to determine the costs associated with its activities, including the cost of supplies, field trips, competition registrations, travel to competitions, and possibly teacher stipends. Clubs may look to fund activities through regular operating budget funds, grants, industry sponsorship, and/or minimal student fees.
  • What will be the costs related to operating your club?
  • How will these costs be covered?
  • Is your school/organization providing any financial support for your club?
  • How will you solicit additional financial resources, and if so how?
  • How will you approach industry to support your club activities, and if so how?
