The Arizona Game and Fish Department is looking for classroom teachers who wish to improve their understanding of GIS (geographic information systems) and its application to wildlife management. Through a year-long program, Department educatIon and GIS staff will serve as mentors to help teachers understand and apply GIS tools and content into their classroom instruction.

The primary goals of the GeoMentor program include helping the participating teachers:

  • explain GIS as well as its history and development.
  • understand the role of GIS in wildlife management.
  • utilize existing GIS tools, such as HabiMap and ArcGis, in their classroom.
  • create and implement a unique, wildlife-based GIS lesson or unit into their classroom.
  • increase awareness of wildlife and conservation related opportunities and activities in Arizona.

Department staff and participating teachers will meet formally on four occasions throughout the school year. One of these would be an in-person training and two would be virtual. The final meeting would be a research symposium in which students present their results. The schedule is:

  • July 21-22, 2015 - first in-peron meeting in Phoenix
  • October 4, 2015 - first virtual meeting
  • February 6, 2016 - second virtual meeting
  • May 14, 2016 - student research symposium

To guarantee the most positive mentoring experience, this program is limited to a small number of participants. Teachers can apply as individuals or school teams of up to three. Ideal participants would:

  • teach middle or high school in a public school in Arizona.
  • teach science and/or social studies (focus on geography).
  • have prior experience integrating technology into the classroom.

Participating educators will be responsible for:

  • attending all required meetings.
  • developing and implementing a unique, GIS-centered, problem-based learning activity during the 2015-16 academic year.
  • guiding students on the development of their research poster and presentation.
  • bringing students to the research symposium.
