Math/Science Day for K-12 Students on College Campus

What is it?


One-day event in April for 4th through 8th graders on college campus featuring over 25 hands-on workshops and 30 demonstrations by professional groups and companies affiliated with the STEM fields.

How is it done?

  • Rely on full time K-12 Outreach Director in Cochise College K-12 Outreach Department.

  • Ask 75 exhibitors to provide activities and demonstrations;  50 accept

  • Recruit volunteers to provide general assistance

  • Email event information to schools on the Cochise County Superintendent of Schools list, plus charter schools and home schools

  • Open online registration in early March

  • Coordinate with varying departments to make entire Cochise campus prepared and open for students on day of event.

  • Budget is $10,000 for marketing, exhibitor breakfast and luncheon, and instructional materials (includes Outreach Specialist salary)

  • Initially funded by SFAz, the event is now part of the College Operations budget

What are the results?

  • High demand for the annual event

  • 1,250 students with 180 teachers and chaperones attend from almost all school districts and home schools in the county.

  • Teachers registered over 1,250 students within one day of registration being open.

  • A majority of the 50 exhibitors are repeat participants

  • Numerous college employees and staff participate as event exhibitors.

  • Positive student responses

  • 50% responded to post event surveys

  • 70% indicated they learned “quite a bit” or “a lot of new information”.

  • 70% after the event said they “like” or “really like” studying STEM subjects compared with just 46% before.

  • Positive teacher responses

  • 62% indicated the event provided improvements in their ability to teach STEM.  

  • Over 96% indicated the event provided opportunities for them to increase the students’ motivation or interest in STEM subjects.

What have we learned?

  • Frequent communication with teachers is critical to ensure their participation.

  • Offer a variety of spaces and accommodations to meet the different needs of the exhibitors (essential to producing a quality event with strong repeat participation).

  • Late Spring is the best time to conduct this event.  Review standardized testing schedules at the schools in advance so as to not conflict with dates when students cannot leave campus.

  • Completed student and teacher surveys submitted by Cochise are collected to determine impact of the event on students’ participation in other STEM outreach activities and enrollment at the College.
