What is it?

Local industry and education partners work together to help students to successfully prepare for their future

How is it done?

  • Rely on efforts of the Technology and Engineering Deans and STEM Coordinator:

  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers;  respond to their workforce needs;  addresses inevitable changes in employee status

  • Hold quarterly luncheon meetings to review programs and new job requirements

  • Maintain current lists of interested partners

  • Invite partners to the college and visit the industry sites often

  • Conduct industry surveys of desired student/job outcomes;  review information with industry members and college support members; align curriculum of programs with industry practices while considering future educational transfer possibilities

  • Provide quality internships for students placed in area businesses

  • Budget:  Cost for staff or administrator support, meeting materials and food

What are the results?

  • Because the Engineering and Technology meetings are now held jointly, there is more cohesiveness and less duplication

  • Industry updates or concerns can be addressed quickly and effectively with collaboration and communication

  • Companies actively participate in coordination with the Cochise College to produce a more viable workforce

  • Better prepared students entering the work force and with more employable skills

What have we learned?

  • Helping students reach their career goals in STEM fields requires the efforts of a broad group of partners
  • In a community where technology changes rapidly, it is effective to have local companies involved in preparing students
  • There is a continuous need to review job requirements for employment and inform students of the changes
  • Both the College and its industry partners are learning a lot about each other
  • To prevent duplication of efforts and better coordination and consistency, it is best to combine meetings with industry partners and the technology and engineering departments simultaneously
  • It is imperative to have a healthy relationship with industry partners
