Homework on Electronic Notebooks

What is it?

Rural high school students have an opportunity to do their Geometry homework on electronic Notebooks

How is it done?

  • Employ technology restrictions to prevent students from accessing the internet freely

  • Rely on college staff to place restrictions and software on Notebooks

  • Instruct/train high school teachers on Notebook usage

  • Install supplemental math programs for students to access (free)

  • Provide time in class for students to use the Notebooks

  • Do not allow students to take the Notebooks home; lack of internet support in homes and potential loss of equipment

  • Provide adequate technology support

  • Budget: Purchase of the Notebooks (Budget $2,500 – 50 Notebooks at $50 each)

What are the results?

  • Rural students are excited to use the Notebooks

  • Test results are demonstrating that the Notebooks help to increase test scores

What have we learned?

  • Working with high school IT department is key
  • Ensure that the teachers are adequately prepared
  • Students enjoyed the technology (especially in rural areas)

  • There are math programs available that are free to teachers

Private donations fund our operating budget, education and research efforts.
